Bantam A - 2014 Provincial Championships

The Nepean Wildcats Bantam A girls hockey club is celebrating triple gold today. After pulling off the ODWHA city regular season and playoff titles, the Wildcats won the OWHA provincial title April 13th in Brampton. The Wildcats gave up just one goal in the entire tournament, en route to a perfect 6 and 0 record.

The OWHA Bantam A Championship was a 24 team event, featuring 6 groups with 4 teams in each. The Wildcats earned 1 of 4 byes available, moving straight to the quarterfinals, storming through round robin play with wins over Chatham (2-1), Toronto-Leaside (4-0) and Clearview (4-0). Nepean outscored the opposition 10-1 in the process.

In elimination play, the 'Cats took down Stoney Creek (1-0 OT) and Oakville (2-0) to advance to the championship game against London. The Devilettes had just upset a brash Whitby team that had confidently expected to find itself in the final.

Head coach Ron Graham had promised in March to wear a tuxedo behind the bench if they made the final and made good on the vow. The best dressed coach in hockey watched his club grab a 1-0 lead in the first minute then control the pace from there. They closed out London with a 2-0 gold medal win, then happily piled on their goaltender who had been so outstanding all weekend.

Congratulations to Hunter Gibbons, Jenni Karam, Isabella Fizzard, Tessa O' Connor, Lindsay Warne, Nicole Lamers, Enid McLean, Lindsey Gill, Amy Graham, Sierra Banks, Julia Aurora, Brooke Tam, Rhys Brown, Sydney Lahey, Laura Cook and Stephanie Richardson. It was a magical season highlighted by gold medal friendships neither likely to be forgotten.
